A Sneak Peek at Feast 2017: Part 2

September 14, 2017

Last week I previewed a few events at the Pacific Northwest’s greatest culinary festival: Feast Portland. This is my first year attending, and I’m so excited to mingle with other food bloggers, restauranteurs, chefs, and artisans – and of course, experience some incredible food and drink.

In my first post, I introduced two well-known Feast events: The Grand Tasting and Night Market. Now, I’m going to tell you about a few more, lesser-known events that I’m lucky to be attending this year as well.

Because Breakfast

On Sunday morning, a handful of incredible bakers, coffee roasters, and crepe makers will descend upon Stumptown Coffee Roasters for the Feast Portland fun-size event dedicated to the most important meals of the day: Because Breakfast.

It’s no secret that I’m a breakfast food fiend. A mean stack of pancakes and a side of crispy bacon is one of my favorite meals. This event will bring the breakfast treats, specializing in those that are a little sweet. Clare Gordon of General Porpoise Donuts in Seattle, Kim Boyce of Bakeshop, Jehnee Rains of Suzette, and Michael Scelfo of Waypoint in Boston will be whipping up pastries, doughnuts, crepes, and other breakfast goodies from 11 am – 2 pm.

I’m stoked to try what General Porpoise will be whipping up for this event. I haven’t made it in to their Seattle shop, but if their Instagram feed is any indication, I’m in for a treat. Maybe Seattle can give Portland doughnuts a run for their money?

Libations at Because Breakfast will be provided by my Pearl District favorite Tea Bar, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, Gruet and more. I’m not a big coffee drinker (in Portland, of all places) but I can get down on some cold brew cocktails and anything from Tea Bar!

I’m eager to attend what might just be the most Instagram-able event of the weekend. Is there anything more precious than a petite pastry and a golden milk latte? I think not.

Best of all? You can attend this event too! Tickets for Because Breakfast are still available! Click here to purchase.

Drink Tank

A food festival in Portland wouldn’t be complete without a thorough celebration of all things Oregon booze. There are few places who meld a culture of local beer, wine, and spirits better than Oregon. During Feast weekend, there’s an ongoing series of events to celebrate the artisans behind your favorite libations, and give you a chance to interact with experts in their field: Drink Tank.

Drink Tank panels are presented by Imbibe, one of the few magazines out there dedicated to all things beverage. These panels bring in experts in specific fields – wine, spirits, and beer, and allow us non-educated alcohol enthusiasts to drink right along with them.

You’ll leave these events feeling like a master sommelier in the making (though it could be the booze getting to your head). At the very least, you’ll leave with some new party knowledge the next time someone pops open a bottle of wine or liquor. Note taking isn’t required, but if you’re like me, you’ll want to soak up all the knowledge you can get during these events.

There are still tickets available for a few of these Drink Tank panels! Here are the links and descriptions for those events.

Quenching America’s New Thirst featuring Beaujolais Winery, France. You know Burgundy and Bordeaux, but do you know Beaujolais? This event will sample 12 different wines from the region, including three major flavor profiles. You’ll learn about pairing these wonderful wines with some of the dishes you enjoy every week. Your next dinner party just got a little more sophisticated.

Kilt’s Not Required: American Single Malts featuring House Spirits distillery in Portland. American whisky has come a long way from Kentucky bourbon and your standard rye. While you can’t call it Scotch, you’ll sample some of America’s stellar single malts made right here in Portland.

Punch Power: Drinks for a CrowdMy college party punch of choice was: jugs of Hawaiian punch, one bottle of vodka, one bottle of rum, and one bottle of lemonade. We called it “Hunch Punch”. Times have changed though, right? Learn how to make proper punch drinks for a crowd at this panel – no Hawaiian Punch allowed.

If you’re attending Feast this year, I’d love to meet you! Shoot me a DM on Instagram and let me know if you’ll be at any events or after parties. Okay, now I’m off to the gym for one last round before a weekend of overindulgence. Balance, my friends!
