Velvet Taco – Dallas, Texas

February 20, 2016

After the three hour car ride from Oklahoma City to Dallas, I was absolutely experiencing major hangry feelings. While I’d planned out several other stops for our weekend trip, in this moment I just wanted whatever food would get into my mouth quickest. While driving into downtown, I did a quick Yelp search and found a taco place less than a mile away – open late, excellent ratings, and margaritas. I was in.

When we pulled up to Velvet Taco, my gut told me I was going to love this place (and then later, my taste buds did too.)

It’s a cozy little restaurant with bar seating set up for large groups, and there’s a wide variety of people there. We saw families with kids, high school students that had just left a school dance, and lots of people like us, hungry twenty somethings who love margs.

Oh yeah, about those margaritas. They’re the way I like my margaritas (and my men) – strong.

Now Velvet Taco isn’t your typical chicken or beef taco joint. Their menu is diverse and innovative, with tacos inspired by cuisines from all over the world. From your American bacon cheeseburger taco to an Indian chicken tikka taco, they have it all. It was hard to pick just a few from this list, they all sounded incredible!

We opted for the #3 Spicy tikka chicken, #16 Fish n’ chips, #1 Buffalo chicken, and #10 Bacon burger.

They were seriously all delicious! All different and full of flavor. They house make all of their sauces, everything is fried crisp, and the vegetables are fresh. You can tell the people at Velvet Taco really care about food.

For sides, we got the rotiserrie corn, served “elote style” with crema, queso fresco, and lime. It’s rich, tangy, and cheesy.

We also got the tots, topped with bacon, goat cheese, cheddar, avocado cream, and a local egg. The picture says enough. These were delicious.

And of course, since velvet is in their title, we had to get the red velvet cake. From the register, I got a peek at a cook spreading thick cream cheese frosting over enormous pans of red velvet cake and thought…if they’re making that many cakes, this has to be good. I’m actually not a huge fan of red velvet cake in general. If you’re going to get something chocolate, get something that’s really chocolate. But this looked too good to pass up!

Not only is there the perfect amount of rich cream cheese frosting, they also drizzle a little something extra on top before serving it. It was good. Like, let-out-an-audible-groan-on-your-first-bite good.

Every single thing we ate at Velvet Taco was amazing, but I love them for more things than just their food. For starters, everyone there is so friendly. When we told our cashier it was our first time in and we were from out of town, he was so genuinely excited we stopped in, and asked us lots of questions about our visit.

Second, all of their cups and utensils are biodegradable, and they actually give a damn about recycling. I had to take a picture of their trash setup.

If you find yourself in Dallas, Texas with taco cravings, Velvet Taco is the place for you. There’s really something to please every palate and preference. There’s even a few veggie options for you vegetarians! For four tacos, two sides, two margaritas, and dessert, it came to just $48. You’ll leave full, happy, and a little smug about your carbon footprint. I think I just found my go-to spot in Dallas.
